The stupid ants. They seem to be coming in the little silver box which I think connects to the outside and the bars on my window or something.

I come home from work and there are like millions of the stupid things swarming my apartment. At least this time only a few had made the trek across my apartment to the kitchen.

They’re unstoppable and horrible.

Here the ants are again from the other side of the special ant entry box. Some of the things below are pieces of peppermint leaves that they didn’t like, but most of the little specks are ants.

These things are the most evil creatures ever invented. It’s not like I even leave food out, or they swarm the food, they just come in in huge numbers and mill around my window and the special ant box.

get a couple ant traps… sheesh

you clearly never lived in Florida, where hordes of fireants kill dobermans and haul off small children to cuba on a regular basis

    haha, funny.

Yeah, that’s the nice thing about living someplace with seasons (not here). Most of the bugs get killed off in the winter, not like here where the Argentine ants are busy forming supercolonies that reach for miles with 2,000 queens in the same supercolony all pumping out babies.

They’re actually swarming around my window because of the tasty borax-laced ant bait. They swarm and feed on it for a while, carry it back to their queen(s) and give it to the whole nest before they die, Die, DIE!

I really should have paid attention when the bait said outdoor use, but instead tried it inside where they were coming in since I couldn’t see their trail outside. They really loved that bait and my apartment.

Since then I’ve taped up the ant box and sprinkled a magic circle of AJAX around the ant box. It seems to keep them from wanting to come in and the ones who do die from the bleachy, detergenty ajax boulders they try crawling over.

Don’t believe the crap you read on the Internet about them being scared off by peppermint leaves or vinegar. Unless these things get directly on them they don’t care at all, and they will crawl over peppermint leaves if they have to.

  6. Kevin says:

    yuck, how unfortunate.

  7. Chris says:

Yeah. Well, after doing some sealing and baiting they seem to have left me alone for a number of months (knock on wood).

  8. Derrick says:

Ant attack seasons again. My best friends are my hot glue gun (for sealing up holes which this apartment is full of) and vinegary-soapy-watery ant-killing and scent cleaning spray.

  9. Lewis says:

I have to agree with you. Ant suck. But we need them, or, other animals do. I must say that ants are my least favorite bug. Even more hated than mosquitoes. Good picture, though :P

Yes, I guess they’re needed, though I think most of the ants around here are Argentine ants which are an accidental import and don’t have many natural predators.

From what I’ve read one family of ants was imported into the US originally and all the Argentine ants are descended from them. I guess usually different ant colonies will fight each other and keep the population down because they have different pheromones.

Not the Argentine ants. They have the same scent, being from one original colony that was imported. They form supercolonies the size of cities and displace native ants which are more beneficial. They also shepherd aphids which destroy live plants so they can suck the aphids honeydew excretions.

Repellent containing orange peel oil (d-limone) actually has been most effective at keeping them away for me to date. It also kills them if sprayed on them since the acid dissolves the waxes in their respiratory system or something. Plus it smells like you’re living inside a giant orange when you use it and probably isn’t a neurotoxin like Raid or something.

Cool shot. You’ll have to add this to my ants group.

  12. Leo says:

    4 months late, added! :)

I’d love to post this photo on my website Sydney Termites if possible.
